How We Test, Score & Recommend

Every product on SentinelPicks is independently tested by our editorial team. We don’t accept payment for placement, and our scoring is based on real-world use — not marketing claims.

Our Testing Process

Before any product is recommended on SentinelPicks, it goes through a multi-stage evaluation process designed to surface what actually matters to a real user — performance under realistic conditions, value for money, security guarantees, and customer support quality.

1. Hands-On Use (4–8 weeks)

We purchase or sign up for every product we review using regular consumer or business accounts — never review-only accounts that vendors might prepare specially. We use the product daily for a minimum of four weeks (eight for security software) across multiple devices and environments before scoring it.

2. Security & Privacy Audit

For antivirus, VPN, password manager, and cloud storage products, we verify the vendor’s security claims independently. This includes checking encryption standards, audit reports, no-logs policies (for VPNs), zero-knowledge architecture (for password managers), and breach history. We also cross-reference findings with published reports from AV-Test, AV-Comparatives, and SE Labs where applicable.

3. Performance Benchmarks

We measure real numbers — VPN speed loss across 10+ server locations, antivirus scan times and CPU impact, hosting page-load speeds via WebPageTest and GTmetrix, password manager sync latency. These tests are repeated three times across different times of day and the average is reported.

4. Support Stress Test

We contact customer support anonymously with realistic problems and rate response time, accuracy, and helpfulness. A great product with terrible support gets marked down — because that’s what users actually experience.

5. Real Pricing Analysis

We look beyond launch-price discounts. Our pricing analysis includes the renewal cost (often 2–3× the intro price), refund policy strictness, and hidden fees. We score products based on long-term value, not 12-month promo pricing.

Our Scoring System

Each product is scored across five weighted categories, then averaged into an overall rating out of 10:

Our Editorial Independence

SentinelPicks is reader-supported. When you buy through some of our links, we may earn an affiliate commission — at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships never influence our scoring or rankings. We frequently recommend products that pay us less (or nothing) over higher-paying alternatives when our testing shows they’re better.

Specifically:

  • We do not accept payment for inclusion in our reviews or “best of” lists.
  • We do not let vendors review or pre-approve our content.
  • We disclose affiliate relationships clearly.
  • If we change a recommendation after publication, we update the article and note what changed and why.
  • We invest a portion of affiliate revenue back into product purchases for testing — so we keep buying things instead of relying on review-only access.

How We Update Reviews

The software industry moves fast. We re-test every recommended product at least once every 12 months, and immediately when:

  • A major version is released (UI overhaul, new pricing tier, removed features)
  • The vendor reports a security incident or breach
  • Independent audits surface significant findings
  • Pricing structures change in ways that materially affect value
  • Reader feedback flags an issue we want to verify

If something we wrote is wrong — outdated pricing, a feature we missed, a bug we didn’t catch — please tell us. Email contact@sentinelpicks.com with the article and what needs fixing. We update reviews within 5 business days when we can verify the change, and credit accurate corrections.
